Evaluation and Iterative Development of Science Education Media Using Teacher Advisory Board Feedback - Dr. Scott J. Warren, PI
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to evaluate and iteratively improve science education media products through structured feedback from an advisory board of science teachers. The study examines scientific accuracy, narrative and visual coherence, and appropriateness for grades 6-8.
What You Will Do
You will review all media products and instructional materials - five AI-generated videos, the Plum Lake Curriculum Guide, the Graphic Novel (Pocadillon Falls), and the SEPA Water Quality and Lead Exposure Unit - and complete structured rating items and open-ended feedback for each. About one week later, you will participate in a 60-90 minute focus group. After revisions are made, you will complete a brief re-review.
Time Commitment
This Phase 1 review is expected to take 2-3 hours depending on how thoroughly you read each product. The curriculum and unit guides together exceed 80 pages, so please set aside adequate time. The Phase 2 focus group is 60-90 minutes. The Phase 3 re-review is 20-40 minutes. Total: approximately 4-5 hours across all three phases.
Audio Recording (Focus Group)
The Phase 2 focus group will be audio recorded only with your permission. You may participate without consenting to recording; in that case, the research team will rely on moderator notes for your contributions.
Risks and Benefits
This study is minimal risk. Risks are similar to ordinary professional feedback activities and online data collection. You may experience minor discomfort when critiquing materials or participating in group discussion. There is no guaranteed personal benefit, though your feedback may directly improve the materials.
Confidentiality
Data will be stored in secure, password-protected files or university-approved cloud storage. Reports will use de-identified summaries. Because the Phase 2 focus group involves multiple participants, the research team cannot guarantee that other participants will keep the discussion confidential. Participants will be reminded to respect others' privacy. Records will be retained for at least three years past the end of the research.

How the Rating System Works
This review uses a two-part rating system for each dimension. Read through this before you begin so you know what to expect on every page.
Each product has several rating dimensions - things like "Overall effectiveness," "Scientific accuracy," and "Grade-level fit." For every single dimension, you will do the following two things:
Step 1: Rate the quality using 1 to 5 stars. This is your direct answer to the question being asked. Give your honest professional judgment. Rate every dimension, even the ones that are working well - a 5-star rating tells the team this area is strong and does not need revision.

2 stars Fair
3 stars Adequate
4 stars Good
5 stars Excellent
Step 2: If you rated anything below 5 stars, a concern section will appear automatically beneath the stars. This is where you tell the team what the problem is so they can fix it. You will see three things in the concern section:
1. Text box Write a plain-language description of the concern. Say what the problem is, where it appears in the material, and what it should say or show instead. The team cannot revise the materials without this description.
2. Three sliders (1-5 each) Severity: How serious is the problem? Occurrence: How often does it appear in the material? Learning Impact: How much would it affect teaching and learning?
If you have only a minor observation and no real concern to report, leave all three sliders at 1.
3. Risk Priority Number (RPN) The three slider values multiply together automatically to produce an RPN score from 1 to 125. A higher score means the concern is more urgent. You do not need to calculate anything - it updates as you move the sliders.
Worked example:You are reviewing Scientific Accuracy for a video. The video mostly gets the science right but one scene incorrectly states that pH 6 is basic. You give it 3 stars (Adequate). The concern section appears automatically. In the text box you write: "Around the 2:30 mark, the narrator says pH 6 is basic. pH 6 is acidic. This needs to be corrected and the pH scale shown on screen should reflect this." You then set Severity = 4 (Major - a factual science error), Occurrence = 1 (Isolated - happens once), Learning Impact = 4 (High - students would likely learn it incorrectly). The RPN calculates to 4 x 1 x 4 = 16, a low-priority flag because the error only happens once. If that same error appeared throughout the entire video, you would set Occurrence = 5 (Pervasive), and the RPN would be 4 x 5 x 4 = 80 - critical, revise immediately.
To summarize: stars first on every dimension, then describe concerns if you have any, then use the sliders to rate how serious they are. If you have no concerns for a dimension, simply give it the stars it deserves and move on.

Water Quality Unit Curriculum Guide
This is a standalone SEPA middle school unit on water quality and lead exposure. It was developed independently of the Plum Lake video series but covers overlapping science content.
